Joe Seliga - Master Canoe Builder | Sunday Jan 31, 2010
There is a great book entitled, "The Art of the Canoe with Joe Seliga". Joe was a master canoe builder in Ely for years and years until his death a few years ago. My friend Deborah Sussex had the great opportunity to photograph Joe and document the entire process of canoe building. Joe lived in Ely, MN right next to the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness. I had the fine fortune of meeting him a few years ago at a wedding that I was helping Deborah photograph. After having a very enjoyable conversation with Joe on the porch, I saw the empty rocking chair and asked Joe if I could take his photograph sitting in that chair. I have always loved this photo and I keep it tucked in my own copy of his book.
